Guitar Lessons: To Read or Not To Read

by admin on December 29, 2009

A question that often comes up in guitar lessons is: How important is reading music?

In this guitar teacher’s opinion, with one or two exceptions, much too much emphasis has been placed on the value of learning to read music. These exceptions would be 1) classical guitar, and 2) playing guitar in an orchestral environment. Other than those two instances, I think that aspiring guitarists would be better served by relying on an instinctive, intrinsic approach to playing guitar rather than spending countless hours on an academic pursuit that they may never utilize in their own playing.

Even though I can read music (I took piano lessons for a number of years and was later able to apply that to the guitar), I tend to stress reading music as a less important element in my teaching than do a significant amount of teachers giving guitar lessons. Even though a guitar student may request that we pursue reading music in our work together, I am prone to steer them in the direction of learning to play songs – using each song learned as a means of extrapolating common guitar playing elements and applying them to the whole.

I explain my approach by referring to the fact that we learn to speak a language long before we learn to read it or before we are able to understand the rules of grammar that we are intuitively applying to our speech patterns. Anyone who has had an extensive conversation with a six-year-old child is able to see that children do not suffer from lack of an academic grasp of grammatical rules. I also explain that the kind of music pursued in the vast majority of popular guitar lessons does not require that the student have even a basic knowledge of how to read music. In fact, I further explain, it is highly likely that the songs that are being covered in the guitar lessons are being created and played by people who do not possess the ability to read music. Anyone who has heard Neil Young talk about his disdain for music theory or has heard Muddy Waters play guitar would have a tough time making a case for the necessity of learning to read music. Do we really think John Lennon’s musical expression was based on a facility for reading music?

As with most things in life, there is no one right way of doing things – especially in the creative realm. So if learning to read music is something that you deem absolutely indispensable, then, by all means, you should engage a guitar teacher who incorporates that feature into his or her guitar lessons. I am merely suggesting that you consider whether reading music is a necessary ingredient in your pursuit to achieve your unique guitar-playing objectives.
