My teaching approach :
My teaching approach is to start off by building a foundation of chords, scales, and basic theory. Once the student as the physical ability to maneuver around the fretboard confidently we then delve into what genre the student is most interested in. From there we go on to build up the techniques necessary to compliment the student's musical interests. I play 6,7, and 8 string guitar and 5, 6 string bass. I'm able to record backing tracks as mp3s for students practice over. Also some students have loop pedals that they bring in and I record backing tracks on them as well.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
It is essential that a student has a notebook of some sort with a folder for charts. The lesson starts off with any questions the student may have regarding the previous week. From there we go over the previous weeks material. From that point we continue on the same path the student has dictated they would like to follow. We may explore new soloing techniques, harmony, melody or rhythms that would further bolster the student's musical goals.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
The initial lesson is more or less an evaluation of the student's existing experience/skill level with the instrument. I simply ask different questions about what they know regarding the guitar or bass and assess their level of play by some impromptu jamming. From this I'm able to get a good idea of how to prioritize concepts and skills for future lessons.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideal student who is someone who has a passion about creating their own music. Someone who is willing to listen and work hard to achieve their musical goals.
