My teaching approach :
My main goal with each of my students is to guide them in developing the skills and know how so that they might continue a long lasting relationship with the guitar and music. The foundational elements I focus mainly on are technique and theory. From there I help the students develop in the direction and in the style or genre they desire.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
Lessons always start with a warm up exercises to build dexterity in the hands. Here we focus on the "how". We then move into the music the student is working on. While working on songs we focus our attention to details that shape the song (ex. key, rhythm, tempo, reading). Other activities we will engage in from time to time: improvisation (ex. soloing or jamming), focusing on an extended technique (ex. harmonics, slide, sweep picking)
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
1- Insure that the guitar they have is properly suited for their needs and size, 2- explain what is expected of them during lesson and in their practice, 3- explain what they can expect from me each lesson, 4- getting the right hand started with basic picking or finger style 5- getting the left hand some work outs to start development of movement.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Someone who is ready to invest time in themselves on a regular basis to take on a new fun and challenging task.
