My teaching approach :
I have a MUSIC • DEGREE (Jazz & Classical Guitar Studies/Performance) from Palm Beach State & Florida Atlantic University - I've also been a member of N.A.f.M.E. (the National Association for Music Educators) and I.A.J.E. (the International Association of Jazz Educators) since 1994.
I tailor my guitar instruction to the individual - Understanding that not everyone desires to read music, some of my students only touch on notation and music theory enough to understand proper timing and basic music theory before we begin learning applicable songs & techniques, while others focus much more on traditional notation and music theory before heading to more advanced material (techniques, songs, etc).
Regardless, my Main Goal as a Guitar Instructor is to get you to understand the instrument. Songs are all a part of learning the guitar, and songs come in time, but songs should NOT be the main focus of any instructor until the student understands proper timing and proper technique (a lot of this just comes down to natural ability - some breeze through it quickly while others may just take a little longer, no biggie).
Remember that everyone progresses at their own rate, and not everyone comes out of the gate playing like Jimmy Hendrix - However, with proper guidance, hard work, and consistent practice, you will progress.
My Instructional Emphasis focuses PRIMARILY on: ♦ Basic Notation (timing); ♦ Proper Technique and Proper Form; ♦ Songs Based Around The Students Interests; ♦ Ear Training; ♦ Music Theory Fundamentals including: Knowledge of Key Signatures and Chord Forms/Chord Structures; ♦ Knowledge of Scales & Modes; ♦ Practical Soloing Techniques.
True there are many players that can't read a note, don't know much theory, and have less than perfect technique/posture/form; But some of these players are "good IN SPITE of it, NOT because of it". Maybe they would improve dramatically if these techniques were emphasized a little more. I feel that when you're able to play your instrument with ease and understanding, you develop confidence and higher esteem about your playing - Therefore the overall benefit is that you have more fun.
There are definitely a lot of great guitar players out there, but just because someone is a good guitar player, or been playing or teaching guitar a long time, or works out of your local music store . . . it Doesn't Necessarily Mean that they're a Good Guitar Instructor. Please make sure you check ALL Music Instructors Qualifications before spending hard earned money $$$ on Lessons!
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
As I said earlier, I tailor my guitar instruction to the individual -- My guitar lessons are not cookie cutter.
The book I typically begin with to help students gain a basic understanding of time and music notation is Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade-1 - This book can be found in most major music stores for $7.99.
In combination with this book students also need to have a Guitar Tuner and a Metronome.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
Introductory Lesson: This depends on the student, their level, and their ability when they begin lessons with me (individual basis).
Assessment: There are many levels of assessment - some of it comes from the students overall guitar knowledge, while some of it comes from their playing ability - I was assessed and graded on many levels throughout my schooling for my music degree, thus I assess my students on many different levels - My evaluation depends on the students overall goals, so it's difficult to make broad generalizations (again, it's all done on an individual basis).
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideal guitar student is proactive; they want to learn and excel; they practice daily (they want to practice, they are NOT forced to practice); they are individuals who enjoy the challenge of learning this daedal instrument.
My main goal is to teach this instrument to those who want to learn it.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
Please call or write for times and availability.
I generally teach weekdays after 5:30pm, and weekends from 11:00am until 4:00pm - But as I said, please call or write for times and availability (none of these times are set in stone - these times may change while others open up).
My influences are:
I thrive on diversity of sound, and I strive to play many styles equally well.
Some of my influences are: Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) - Adam Jones (Tool) - Scott Henderson - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Pat Metheny - Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) - Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) - Jimi Hendrix - Steve Morse - Dave Matthews - Wes Montgomery - Mike Stern - Jeff Beck - Warren Haynes - Stevie Ray Vaughan - Steve Vai - Joe Satriani - Eric Johnson - Eddie Van Halen - David Evans (U2) - Frank & Dweezil Zappa - Alex Lifeson (Rush) - Robert Smith (The Cure) - Andy Summers (The Police) - Joe Bonamassa - Robin Trower - Eric Clapton . . . and many more (don't worry if you don't see your favorite guitarist or band listed here - I'm influenced by and listen to a lot of music).
Fee Schedule :
My cancellation/booking policy :
Full 48-hour cancellation notice required - Same day cancellations forfeit that lesson - Unfortunately, students who fail to notify three(3) times will be dropped - Of coarse there's always a little flexibility here depending on the circumstances.
Which methods of payment are accepted?
Checks, Cash
