My teaching approach :
I teach guitar students in Mechanicsville, Virginia at the home I share with my Ellen and our three cats. Additionally, I offer distance learning via Skype. I have been playing the guitar for over 25 years and I play a little of everything. My favorite styles to play are acoustic finger-style and rock. I am a Berklee College of Music alumni from 1987 and also studied briefly with Michael Fath in the early 90s. I've taught over 100 students in my 8+ years of guitar teaching.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
A typical lesson for an intermediate student is broken down into several parts. First, we work on music theory and guitar fret board knowledge. Second, we work on playing music suited to the students interests. Third, we work on technique (chord changes, left hand technique or right hand rhythm work, sweep picking and multi-finger tapping).
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I interview each student in-depth and have them play what they can. I don't believe in a one-size fits all approach. A huge part of the value I add as a teacher is creating a custom program to help each student reach their goals. Every student comes to me with a different set of skills, abilities, and interests. I meet each student where they are and we work forward from there. We will revisit and refine their goals as they progress.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideals students are enthusiastic, hard working, teens and adults. I teach all levels and styles, but my specialty is taking beginning and intermediate (acoustic finger-style and rock) players to the next level.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
I generally teach Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and recommend most students work with me 1 hour every other week.
My influences are:
Michael Hedges, John Williams, Eddie Van Halen
