My teaching approach :
I teach beginner through advanced guitarists and work with them to custom tailor a learning plan that works best for them. If a student wants to learn chords and songs for vocal accompaniment we can do that. If they want to learn fingerstyle guitar (e.g. Merle Travis/Chet Atkins, James Taylor etc.). I focus on steel string acoustic guitar and teach both fingerstyle and flat picking techniques and have been playing for about 30 years. I enjoy teaching and nothing makes me feel better than seeing the look on a student's face when they've successfully learned a new technique or song.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
It depends on the student's level of playing. It's important for a student to be relaxed and not feel intimidated so I start off by asking them what their goals are and what they would like to learn. Then I proceed to show them a technique, lick or song SLOWLY so they can grasp the concept and then be able to rehearse it later to master the mechanics of it, then show them how to apply it in a song.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I think students learn best in a relaxed, easy going setting. No pressure. I'll sit down with a student and ask them what their goals are and what they would like to learn on guitar. If the student is experienced, I'll have them play a song or piece of a song or some licks to see what level they're at, then go from there. For beginners I find showing them basic chords along with basic technique is a good way to start since it keeps it interesting
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Attentive, eager to learn, likes to jam (intermediate, advanced) and learn songs. Someone who enjoys all sorts of music styles and might like to incorporate some of that into their playing style. A student who is interested in finger style picking is always a pleasure to teach since it opens up the guitar to many possibilities for solo performance or vocal accompaniment (e.g. James Taylor etc.)
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
