My teaching approach :
I've been playing and writing songs since 1971. I have a B.A. with a Minor in Music from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. We will lay a strong musical foundation with structured lessons including, but not limited to: playing fundamentals, music/fretboard theory, ear training, as well as positive practice habits. My goal is to provide the student with the foundational tools that will enable them to learn and figure out favorite songs on their own, play with other musicians and even write their own songs. I also teach voice and beginning piano.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
1st 1/2 of lesson, I'll ask the student to show me their progress since the last lesson w/ whatever homework they were given. Trouble spots will be worked out & corrected at that point. Then, if the student has progressed satisfactorily, I'll introduce new material I explain each new step we take as it pertains to the big picture as well as the task at hand. My method develops a musician as opposed to someone who can play chords and some songs.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
We begin with learning the parts of the instrument, from there we go step by step. Students will learn music theory as they learn to play the instrument. With a complete beginner, it will usually take from 4 - 6 lessons before it can be determined whether they can grasp mentally as well as physically the instrument. It takes time in the very beginning for their coordination to develop, and the concept of theory to begin to gel.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Burning passion to learn and play their instrument, ability to pay attention, willingness to practice every day, and then play their instrument every day as well. Someone who understands professional or even good amateur playing ability does not happen overnight. Someone who wants more than just to play chords.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
Monday - Saturday, afternoons/early evenings are ideal; however, late morning is also available.
My influences are:
Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Mamas & The Papas, Jim Croce, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash... too many to list.
