My teaching approach :
I think anyone can learn to play guitar, so long as you have the passion. I teach with a passion for music and I seek for it to transfer to my students. I like to make lessons fun but also like to challenge my students, always pushing them to become better! I've been teaching guitar since the age of 17, when I could first drive to meet my students. I worked my way through college teaching guitar as I was studying classical guitar at William Paterson U. Since 2007, I've been making a living exclusively from teaching and performing.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
Typically the student will have an assignment from the week before. Each lesson is spent on going over that assignment to assess progress. Trouble spots are addressed. Then new ideas and challenges are introduced to add to the skill set that is being worked on and a new assignment will be given. The details of this vary greatly from student to student.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I like to start by discussing the student's favorite music and what they'd like to do with the guitar. What do they want to be? Why do they want to play? If it's a student that has some experience already I'll usually ask them to play a little so I can assess their ability. I'll ask them what they know, what they did with their last teacher, what would they like to know. Once I get to know them, we get to work.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
One that has a passion for music and learning! The ideal student also knows not the meaning of impossible.
