My teaching approach :
I teach acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass guitar at the New Orleans Academy of Music. As a graduate of the Music Industry Studies program from Loyola University New Orleans, I studied both the business and production aspects of music. I have been playing guitar for ten years and am currently the guitarist and bassist for New Orleans folk-rock band The Acadias. Drawing inspiration from my mother who is also a music educator, I work with my students to develop both their musical identity and creative potential especially through songwriting.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
My typical music lesson is fast-paced and energetic, with questions abound. I really like to have my students understand "The Big Picture" of music theory. I always make sure my students understand how everything relates, and I create an atmosphere where asking tons of questions is encouraged and welcomed.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
The first lesson is always about getting to know your guitar (make and model) and all of its parts, as well as any other gear you may have. First lesson always includes tuning the guitar as well. I assess the student's playing ability by asking them if they have learned any songs. If they say yes, I encourage them to play part of one so that I can watch and listen.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideal guitar student is one who knows what kind of music he or she likes and wants to play or emulate. It is so fun and easy to work with a student that has definite goals in mind and as far as what songs they want to learn or what styles they want to play. Even if they don't come to me knowing these things, I will definitely help them find the music about which they can be passionate.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
I have no set days of the week or hours. I will always work out a time that is best for my students. I personally prefer to teach in the mornings where "young minds" are fresh and I'm also not tired yet!
My influences are:
I grew up playing mostly rock. metal, and alternative guitar. Though recently I have enjoyed playing in a folk rock band and learning more about folk and country guitar. Here are some of my influences (bands and musicians) past and present Linkin Park, Metallica, Blink 182, Incubus, John Petrucci, Jimmy Page, John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Tom Morello, David Gilmore, Kurt Cobain
Fee Schedule :
Lessons are paid for on a monthly basis at the beginning of each month. Fees: $80/month for weekly 1/2 lessons $160/month for weekly hour lessons These fees include months with both 4 and 5 lesson days during that particular month. The 5th lesson is "on the house"
