My teaching approach :
I give the student all the tools he needs to know to get up on stage at their local blues jam and kick some butt! I give them the musical tools to improvise, play excellent rhythm, perform with authority, creativity, and imagination. I stress learning from the best but not being a clone. Having a unique identity on the guitar is the most important thing. I always begin with building on what the student already knows, then taking them to cool and far out places in the wonderful world of guitar. I find out what music stimulates the student most, and we work from there. Good times.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
I find out what the student knows, then we add things brick by brick. We fill in the holes, learn cool songs, add to the vocabulary, and investigate cool licks, hip chord inversions, and why they sound so good. We also get into the history of where these sounds come from to better understand the context of chords, scales, and arpeggios. Being a great guitar player is also about being a music historian.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I have the student play the most comfortable thing he is able to play. I then ask him questions about what he's studied and what kind of music he likes. Then I find out where he wants to go, and what troubles he's had with his playing. I ask about chords, scales, and phrasing, and watch him do his thing. We springboard off whatever he's been working on the most, and take it from there. I find out what he needs, and I give it to him.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
A hard working lover of music and the guitar, with a passionate need to get better on the instrument.
