My teaching approach :
My lessons are relaxed. As you will see reflected in the testimonials on my website, I try to make people feel at ease so they can enjoy the lesson and the learning process. Its important to me that my students show constant improvement, so even though I don't badger them about practicing if they had a busy week, I make sure we have a concentrated, methodical practice and learning of new material during the hour. You pay for the lessons, you dictate how the time is spent. If you're bored with a song, you tell me and we focus on something else. Curious about music theory? We'll talk about it
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
Most of my students have songs that they have picked out that I have modified (if necessary) to fit their current ability. I have a BA in music composition, so I can usually make a song less complex while still maintaining its overall sound so a student can play the song with the track. Some of my students are songwriters that have me help them with their songs, chord progressions, rhythm, etc. Occasional music theory as interest dictates
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I'll typically have them tell me as much about their guitar background as possible before the first lesson. At the first lesson, I'll typically briefly gloss over a list of basics to see what their confidence/knowledge level is, and then I will ask them to play me a song, any song. If we do not already have a song or concept picked out to go over, I will usually teach a basic chord progression and a basic scale to "jam" on over it.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
I appreciate students that have lives outside of guitar and want to learn the instrument without a lot of hassle. These are typically working professionals who do their best to practice, but can't get to it every day. Every teacher loves the die hard students who practice every day, and if that's your personality, I've got lots of stuff to teach you too.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
All Days All Hours. (If you really want a lesson at 4am, I might charge extra, but I could probably make it happen :)
My influences are:
My main influences are in the Indie Rock, Bluegrass, and Metal genres. I started playing guitar trying to play At The Drive-In, Thrice, Cursive, and Alkaline Trio. I took formal jazz guitar lessons for 5 years in college which I did not particularly care for, but it taught me a lot. These days I play a lot of bluegrass still, but also a lot of pop and hiphop songs I find on YouTube.
Fee Schedule :
Lessons are charged hourly. $45 if I come to you. $35 at my studio For groups, see my website as it changes.
My cancellation/booking policy :
Everyone gets one freebie (bail on me at the last minute with no charge), I understand things happen. After that (and before that if possible) I require 24 hour notice or I need to charge for that lesson, since I will have scheduled my day and other students around it.
Which methods of payment are accepted?
Cash
I have been teaching guitar for:
3 Year(s)
