My teaching approach :
In order to feel free playing the guitar, one must learn to recognize the notes of the neck outside of the box patterns that most guitarists use. If a student wishes to learn to play freely the whole neck of the guitar, then this can be taught by saying the names of the notes as one plays scales along single strings, and then across the neck. I can teach you to learn the names of the notes on your fretboard and recognize them as freely as a pianist recognizes his keys. I am classically trained under Doug Neidt of UMKC and trained in jazz under Rod Fleeman of UMKC.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
We start by warming up on a scale. The warm includes the student playing through the scale on his own, and then with the teacher. Next we improvise with the scale over a chord progression. Next we would look at whatever songs we are working on, or whatever the student is curious about on the guitar. After going over all the old stuff from past lessons, we can learn new songs off of cds the student brings in or from notated music.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
In the first lesson we talk about what the student knows about the guitar. If the student knows basic open chords, then we study scales to improvise with. If the student only wants to play his favorite songs, then we can focus on that. The more intense students will begin by memorizing the notes on the neck of the guitar.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideal guitar student is someone who really wants to learn to play the guitar. They practice every day as much as it takes to improve just a little bit. Whenever they come to class, they have questions to ask about what is being studied. They have fun in lesson, and we even chat about our personal lives. We become very good friends over the years.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
My hours are very flexible. It is summer vacation so nearly any time is good.
My influences are:
I am trained in classical guitar by Doug Neidt of the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and in jazz by Rod Fleeman of UMKC. I am very influence by psycadelic rock from the sixties and the blues. My favorite bands growing up were the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. Currently I am into anything I can get my hands on. I just want to expand my musical vocabulary. I am very into progress
