My teaching approach :
I have a B.A. in Music from Wheaton College, where I studied jazz and classical guitar. I am a professional performer and have toured to New York City, Nashville, Chicago, Cincinnati, and St. Louis, in addition to performing extensively in Michigan. Through my 12 years of experience teaching guitar lessons I have developed a unique intuitive approach to teaching and emphasize having fun in the learning process.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
We will explore music that the student is interested in and learn to read music from books and how to play by ear.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
If students have taken lessons before, I go over any materials that they have previously studied and ask them to play me something. I look for technical things (i.e. right and left hand position) and musical things (i.e. tempo, dynamics) to work on. If a student has never played before I begin by introducing proper hand position for the guitar and how to fret notes cleanly and then we jump in learning some music.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
My ideal guitar student would have a strong desire to learn, be willing to take chances and try new things, and have time to practice 4 - 5 days/week.
Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:
I have a flexible schedule and can work around the needs of my students.
