A father of 5 boys myself, you can understand why my experience is with children and beginners. My teaching style is very flexible and is structured around the student’s ability to learn. We start out with learning about the guitar and how to tune the guitar (nothing is more frustrating than trying to learn on a guitar that is out of tune). The student learns how to finger the guitar, a process that leaves littler fingers and hands sore, so I suggest the student start with a ¾ size guitar. I do have these available to rent or buy. The thing that most puts kids off from learning guitar from a teacher is what I call “Learning how to play Mary Had a Little Lamb syndrome”. I like to find out what music the student likes and gear my lessons around that style. My students should be able to play something fun by the end of their first lesson. I try to leave “home work” that is fun so they look forward to picking up their guitar every day. It is when these homework assignments are completed that we can move on to each new part of our lessons.
