My teaching approach :
With 10 years of teaching experience and 12 years as a professional guitarist in Chicago and Los Angeles, I approach each student according to their unique learning style. My goal is that each student reaches their potential, learns valuable disciplines, and has fun too! I have a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Studies from DePaul University and served as the Worship Pastor for 2 churches over the past 9 years. Styles include Rock, Classical, Jazz, Country, Irish, Latin, etc. I'm also a bassist, pianist, vocalist, and composer which brings a seasoned approach to the most efficient ways to learn.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
Learn to read music through an instructional book that includes a cd to play along with. Learn chords, scales, and rhythms. An opportunity to learn some of your favorite songs from your personal music collection. From there we tailor the lessons to your specific needs and goals. Maybe soloing/improvisation, finger picking, theory, song writing, gear and effects, auditions, different styles, etc.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
Ask a short series of questions about their musical experience and goals. If possible, I ask them to play something that they're comfortable with just to give me an idea of their skill level and how we can move ahead.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Consistent with practice and showing up for lessons. Being timely and prepared.
