Levels taught :

My teaching approach :
I teach beginners how to play simple chords that require the use of only two fingers and work towards more complicated chords, and incorporate songs into the lessons as soon as the student knows the right chords. I also try to get students playing along with recordings of the songs they're working on and have them use Windows Media Player (or something similar) to slow down the music. I play every Friday and Saturday with my band Element 78 and also play acoustic shows on Sundays with the singer.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
With a beginner, in a half hour lesson, during the first 10 minutes we work on scales. We spend the next 10 minutes working on chord exercises, and the last 10 minutes on any strumming exercises or songs the student is working on. This is obviously subject to change based on difficulties the student might be having, or the song he or she is working on.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I'll ask a student how much experience they have with the guitar and musical instruments or singing. If they have experience with the guitar, I'll ask them to play G, C, F, Bminor, and B major, in that order. Whichever one they can't play is the level we start at (see my website for more information about this).
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Someone who is open minded about learning new songs they're not familiar with and also brings in music they are interested in learning. Someone who also is willing to work on their technique and practice at least 30 minutes a day.
