My teaching approach :
I really try to make the lessons fun and still have the student take something new home every lesson. Depending on the age I will either start with the young ones sight reading and learning the basics to older kids and adults learning chords and songs right away and then building up finger strength through scale practice and using the metronome properly. I really try to get the student to learn the styles he or she likes but still learn all the theory and scales and arrpeggios and solid rhythm playing and lead playing and then eventually improv...
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
First we will warm up with some scales using the metronome, depending on level and proficiency, then next we will play the songs and exercises from the weeks before and then if the student is ready, move on to the next assignment...
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I assess through having the student play what he or she is most comfortable with and then check to see how their rhythm playing is and see if they know any scales or specific styles. I check to see if they know how to use the metronome and listen to see how their technique is... Obviously beginners, I start from the beginning..
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
One that has the time to practice, shows up with a good attitude and has the assignments at least halfway realized and also one who searches out new styles and techniqes.
