My teaching approach :
I believe that keeping the student happy and motivated is the most important aspect. The way that I learned was a balance of techniques, scales, rhythms, chords and other bookwork and then applying those techniques to popular songs the student likes. This helps to keep all aspects of the class fresh and meaningful.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
After the guitar was tuned to pitch, warm-up exercises (scales, finger exercises) would then begin. After that, the previous lesson would be reviewed to ensure that the student was ready to progress. After that, whatever aspect of improvement needed would be addressed i.e. rhythm/strumming, chord transitions, tablature reading, fingerpicking methods. The lesson would end with beginning to learn a song that the student enjoys.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
I believe that an introductory consultation/meeting is a very important thing before the student ever starts. I ask the student what they hope to accomplish and determine if we would be a good fit from there. Then, I would ask the student to play some chords, a scale or maybe a song he/she knows that they feel comfortable with to see how far along the student is musically.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
Anyone that is motivated to be a great musician and realizes that it takes time and discipline to accomplish is an ideal student. A drive to succeed and excitement are vital qualities for any aspiring student to posses.
