My teaching approach :
Most students simply want to learn to strum some of their favorite tunes. For these, I first teach some of the easier basic chords and strum patterns, and some cool, but easy songs to use them on. Then we progress to more colorful chords and more complex songs, including some "goal songs" of the student's choosing. If a student wants the music theory to go along with the guitar skills they learn, instruction includes reading music notation and learning chord theory. For elementary age students, emphasis is on learning some simple songs and having fun with music.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following
Warm up fret hand fingers with simple exercises. Show off time - student demonstrates some skill or song they feel good about. Review previous lesson points. Tackle new skill, knowledge, or song. Time for practicing what you've learned and asking questions.
Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following
The free, introductory lesson is a time for a student to get a feel for how I teach and decide if he/she wants to have me teach them. I try to get some information from the student that will help me figure out what and how I will teach them. In the case of a student who already know how to play some, I assess his/her skills with an inventory of chords, scales, and songs the student knows as I evaluate the student's technique.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following
The ideal guitar student is, more than anything else, enthusiastic about learning to play. That quality will carry them far in their music education. A good ear for music helps tremendously. It's also a great thing if the student has a good guitar that is easy to play and tune.
